Work & efficiency.
Every sanding pass counts.

The substrate, coating and work stage determine stock removal and change intervals. A clear grit choice keeps the job predictable.

  • Choose the right removal rate

Do not start unnecessarily coarse or move to a fine grit too soon.

  • Reduce clogging

Assess the surface condition and coating first.

  • Plan changes more effectively

Make full use of both sides.

  • Maintain a consistent sanding pattern

Progress through grits in sensible steps.

  • Avoid downtime

Plan the right pack quantity before the project begins.

  • Allow for realistic consumption

Allow a reserve for condition, pressure and working method.

Method and assumptions

Planning range: 15–40 m² per complete disc and sanding pass, followed by a 15% reserve. No published laboratory figure is available for this exact RIWO disc, so the result is deliberately shown as a range. A heavily worn surface is planned with two passes.

Setup

Drive board, Superpad and sanding disc.

The white Superpad provides a flat, force-transmitting base and protects the back of the double-sided sanding disc from unnecessary wear.

The drive board, Superpad and sanding disc must be compatible and precisely centred. Switch the machine off completely before fitting, turning or changing the disc.

RIWO sanding-disc mascot giving a thumbs-up
BasicsWhat are double-sided sanding discs?

Double-sided sanding discs have a usable abrasive surface on both sides. When the first side loses effectiveness, switch off and open the machine, then turn the disc over.

MaterialWhat is silicon carbide used for?

Silicon carbide is a very hard, sharp-edged and comparatively brittle abrasive grain. Confirmed applications for these RIWO discs include parquet, hardwood, concrete, screed and old paint.

SequenceWhich grit sequence makes sense?

K16/K24 are for very heavy stock removal, K36/K40 for initial sanding, K60 for intermediate sanding, and K80/K100 for finer preparation. The exact sequence depends on the floor and subsequent treatment.

Occupational safetyWhat precautions are needed for dust?

Dry machine sanding of concrete and screed can create heavy dust exposure. Effective extraction, suitable respiratory and hearing protection, and compliance with the machine instructions are essential. Applicable occupational-safety requirements must also be observed.

Abrasive grainsSilicon carbide, zirconia or aluminium oxide?

Abrasive grains differ in hardness, toughness and fracture behaviour. A blanket ranking would be misleading: the material, coating, machine and work stage determine the right choice. This page describes only the confirmed applications of RIWO silicon carbide discs.

In practiceWhen should the disc be turned or replaced?

If stock removal drops noticeably or the sanding pattern becomes uneven, switch off the machine and inspect the disc. A worn first side can be turned over; do not continue using damaged discs.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about double-sided sanding discs.

What does “usable on both sides” mean?

Both sides of the disc can be used. When the first side loses effectiveness, switch off the machine, inspect the disc and turn it over.

Which pack sizes are available?

K16 is available exclusively as a 5-pack. K24, K36, K40, K60, K80 and K100 are available as 10- or 20-packs.

What diameter are the discs?

The diameter is Ø 406 mm, or 16 inches, and the centre hole measures 25 mm.

Is a Superpad required?

The product guidance specifies a suitable white Superpad as a support and protective layer. Always centre the pad and disc precisely.

Which grit is suitable for old coatings?

K16 or K24 are often suitable for heavy stock removal. Continue through progressively finer grits afterwards. If in doubt, test a small area first.

Which grit is suitable for intermediate sanding?

K60 is intended for intermediate sanding and preparation for finer grits. The exact sequence depends on the substrate and finishing system.

How many discs do I need per m²?

There is no reliable flat-rate figure without verified consumption data. The substrate, coating, machine, contact pressure and working method all affect consumption.

Which machines are the discs suitable for?

For single-disc machines with a compatible Ø 406 mm / 16-inch system and suitable backing pad. The drive-board diameter, mounting system and operating instructions must all match.

Is K40 currently available?

When checked on 13 July 2026, K40 was sold out in both pack sizes. Current availability is shown on the relevant product page.

Can I enquire about larger quantities?

Yes. Trade customers can submit the substrate, grit, expected quantity and frequency of use through the enquiry form. Terms are discussed individually.
